Sweet Bread

These lovely Sweet Bread is soo popular back at home in Poland! I have best memories with that lovely sweet bread (properly known as “chałka/ chalka”)!
This recipe is so fast to do and you can just make it in the morning and have it for a lovely snack or afternoon treat. It is genuinely so good :) Imagine soft and fluffy inside with sweet crest on top, then add some butter and jam on top and off you go with an amazing snack :)

This particular recipe comes from Thermomix, and honestly you do not need to change a thing, as it’s just perfect.
Try a little bit of heaven :)

Ingredients:

1x whole egg

1x egg yolk and 1x egg white separated

100g of butter

50g of sugar

15g of dry yeasts

150g of room temperature milk

500g of flour (type 500 used here)

a splash of vanilla extract

a decent pinch of salt

For topping:

30g of flour

20g of sugar

25g of butter

Start off making the dough:

Take a small pot and add your milk and heat it up gently just to the room temperature, then add your butter and gently melt that. Turn the heat off. Make sure it is NOT too hot! As it will make a scramble from eggs! Add your whole egg and egg yolk and a half of the egg white, then add sugar, dry yeasts and vanilla extract, just mix it.
Take a big bowl and combine your flour and salt and add all your wet ingredients. Make a nice gently sticky dough.
Cover with cling film and leave to double the size for around 30min - to an hour.

In the meantime make the topping:

Simply combine the ingredients in hands to make a crumble and then leave in a fridge.

Prepare two trays and line them with baking paper.

When your dough is ready that’s when the fun starts. Divide the dough into two.

Then each of the half divide into 3 and using your hands start rolling thick “line”. You will make a braid from the 3 bits - see pictures below. The ends you can then roll under gently.

Repeat the same with second half.

Move them onto the prepared trays and cover with kitchen towel.

Turn on the oven to 180C degrees.

When oven is ready take the kitchen towel off your sweet breads, then with the remaining balance of the egg white brush the top and sprinkle heavily with your topping.

Bake for around 20 - 25mins, until lovely and gold. Leave to cool a bit and enjoy!
